As we are all aware, the Coronavirus, or COVID-19, has thrown the world into a sort of disarray. Due to this, Wag N’ Wash is holding nothing back when making sure that our customers, their companion animals, our employees, our Franchise Owners, and the families of everybody involved, are as safe as possible when it comes to visiting our stores. Moving from the present to the future, though, it’s important to remember that all of the craziness that we are all dealing with will eventually pass, life will pick back up, and things will get back to normal. In that regard, though, it’s also important to remember that here at Wag N’ Wash, we have survived all sorts of crazy things over the last 20 years. In addition to residing in the recession resilient pet industry, by sticking true to our mission, Wag N’ Wash has remained and will remain the ultimate destination for cats and dogs.

Recession resilient, or recession-proof industries, are unique. These are the industries that are able to continue selling a product that people will buy no matter what’s happening in the economy, and yes that includes toilet paper. But over the past two decades, not only is pet ownership up but spending on pets is up. The fact is, is that people spend more money on their pets during a recession which means that the pet industry definitely falls into the unique recession resilient industry, as well! Here are some numbers:

  • Around 85 MILLION families in the United States own a pet
    • This comes out to approximately 68% of all households
  • Since 2011, spending on pets has increased almost 7% annually
    • Over the past 10 years, this number is 4.6% which is THREE TIMES faster than overall consumer spending
  • Pet care spending grew 29% during the 2001 recession and 17% during the 09-09 recession
  • Millennials make up 25% of the US population and own 35% of all pets
  • 41% of Baby Boomers over the age of 70 own pets
    • Fewer than 50% of Baby Boomers have hit 70 which means there’s plenty of room to grow

Our Pet Store Franchise is Starting 2020 Strong!

With 2020 already in full swing, and with February already almost upon us, we wanted to take a look on some of the noteworthy moments in 2019 that helped our pet store franchise finish the year strong – celebrating our 20th anniversary, being able to add multiple new executive team members, launching new operational tools, and reaching some fantastic fundraising milestones! All of these things that we were able to accomplish in 2019 have us and our Franchise Owners extremely excited for what 2020 is going to hold!

Throughout the final few months of 2019, we welcomed key team members to our corporate headquarters team including Vice President of Marketing, Kristen Wellen, Senior Marketing Manager, Amanda Moore, and Disctric Manager, Brooklynn McMurray. By adding this level of talent, we’ve been able to roll out a new email marketing platform and we’ve been able to introduce a new social media management tool, both of which have already proven to be a valuable investment to help bolster our pet store franchise’s marketing efforts systemwide. This can further be seen by the fact that Wag N’ Wash generated double digit same store sales growth and that we celebrated many notable franchise locations wins including our Phoenix store’s 30% increase in year-over-year sales and the Queen Anne store’s roll out of online ordering.

We are also very proud of the fact that we were able to find opportunities to make the world a better place. In 2019, we were able to run our 2nd annual “Round-Up for Freedom Serivce Dogs” national fundraising campaign in which we were able to raise upwards of $17,000 thanks to our pet store franchise’s loyal customers, employees, and supporters of Freedom Service Dogs. All of these proceeds went towards Freedom Service Dogs’ mission of helping veterans who have made life-altering sacrifices unite with service dogs from the program and all of the dogs are all “rescues and go through extensive training at each state’s penitentiary, followed by additional specialized training to meet the needs of the veterans.” For 2020, the International Franchise Asociation (IFA) recognized our inspiring efforts for this campaign with a “Support Our Veterans” award during its industry-renowned Franchising Gives Back ceremony.

FOX 21’s Lauren McDonald took Fox News to the Wag N’ Wash location in Monument, Colorado to demonstrate to viewers how pet owners can ensure their pets celebrate safely during the holiday season. 

Before diving into the tips and tricks of pet safety, General Manager Alex Culbertson gave McDonald a tour of the location, detailing the specific features of our pet store franchise like the in-house bakery and grooming services. 

For pets that feel increased anxiety from the bustling fun that comes with the holidays, Wag N’ Wash has the tools you need to aid your furry friends. Firstly, Culbertson and McDonald discussed how to navigate the anxiety and stress that pets feel with the influx of people and food at large gatherings. Depending on the situation, there are multiple tools you can use to alleviate your pet’s stress. At Wag N’ Wash, we carry treats that you can offer to your furry friends that help decrease the anxiety while also not stifling their appetite. Our pet store franchise also carries lick deterrent to protect the paws of pets who lick their paws when they are nervous, all natural anxiety aiding relief, and CBD treats. Wag N’ Wash Hosts 2nd Annual “Round Up for Freedom Service Dogs”

As a pet franchise dedicated to giving back, Wag N’ Wash loves getting involved with our communities to help raise awareness and support. For the month of November, Wag N’ Wash has launched an extra special campaign to raise money for veterans.

With Veteran’s Day having been celebrated on November 11th, Wag N’ Wash and non-profit Freedom Services Dogs have partnered to hold the second annual “Round Up for Freedom Services Dogs” for the entire month of November at Wag N’ Wash stores across the country, including the Cherry Hills location in New Jersey. 

As the second installment of the campaign that began in 2018, this campaign “aims to raise money to help veterans regain their independence by obtaining the assistance they need from a service animal for free.” Starting on November 1st and ending on November 30th, locations of our pet franchise nationwide will offer customers the option to round up to the nearest dollar while checking out. 

The mission of Freedom Service Dogs is to help veterans who have made life-altering sacrifices unite with service dogs from the program. All proceeds from the campaign will go directly towards this mission. The dogs are all “rescues and go through extensive training at each state’s penitentiary, followed by additional specialized training to meet the needs of the veterans.”

Wag N’ Wash President Rob Flanagan also spoke on how Wag N’ Wash holds the partnership with Freedom Service Dogs close to our hearts as a pet franchise dedicated to enriching our communities. “We’re excited to continue our partnership with Freedom Service Dogs,” Robert said. “This is an initiative that we hold close to our hearts, as supporting companions, our customers and every community we serve is a top priority. Rounding up is a powerful, yet simple way to help get our customers involved. Plus, to honor our previous campaign, Wag N’ Wash Headquarters will match up to $5,000 in donations from customers.”

When the first campaign launched last year in 2018, our stated goal was actually exceeded by $2,000, according to organizers. In fact, the campaign earned the silver award in the “Support Our Veterans” category during the International Franchise Association’s Franchising Gives Back ceremony. For this month, the campaign features added fundraising efforts with a GoFundMe pageThis GoFundMe page has an individual goal of $5,000, and holds the purpose of offering individuals the ability to contribute and donate if they do not have the opportunity to round up in stores or want to donate any additional funds. As of November 5th, the campaign had already raised nearly $300.  

Our customers will also get a sweet treat when they participate in this campaign for our pet franchise. Through our partnership with KLN Family Brands, every donating customer will receive a complimentary bag of dog treats as a part of Round Up Freedom Service Dogs.
